Griffith Observatory

Griffith, whose plan for a public observatory was as visionary as it was audacious. From Griffith's bequest in 1919 to the Observatory's dedication on May 14, 1935, the story shifts to the astronomers, architects, and public leaders who made his vision to reality. From there, the Observatory welcomed 70 million visitors and became the world's leader in public astronomy, a story told in the context of the building's four Directors." |

Michael Landy: Saints Alive
National Gallery 23 May – 24 November 2013 "A series of large-scale kinetic sculptures bring a contemporary twist to the lives of the saints." Landy’s large-scale sculptures consist of fragments of National Gallery paintings cast in three dimensions and assembled with one of his artistic hallmarks – refuse. He has scoured car boot sales and flea markets accumulating old machinery, cogs and wheels to construct the works. Visitors can crank the works into life with a foot pedal mechanism |

Souzou: Outsider Art from Japan

This musical automaton is much loved and over the last century has become the icon of The Bowes Museum. The Silver Swan dates from 1773 and was first recorded in 1774 as a crowd puller in the Mechanical Museum of James Cox, a London showman and dealer." |

Geoffrey Farmer: The Surgeon and the Photographer

The work consists of hundreds of puppet-like figures, composed of images cut from old books and magazines mounted onto fabric forms, and is accompanied by a new film commission.
